Discovering Christian Joy

What is Christian joy? Is it an emotion? If so how can God command it as He does in Philippians 4:4 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16? Is it the same as “happiness”? How do we find joy in the Christian life?

Having joy in the Lord doesn’t mean that we never grieve or feel sorrow or sadness. Joy is the soul’s delight in the grace and sufficiency of God in all things. It’s a product of the work of the Spirit of God in us.

“When I think upon my God, my heart is full of joy that the notes dance and leap from my pen.” —Franz Joseph Haydn

Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
